L.M. Montgomery
The author of the famous Canadian novel Anne of Green
Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery, was born at Clifton, Prince
Edward Island, Nov. 30, 1874. Her father, Hugh John Montgomery, was a
local merchant with a failing business. Her mother's name was Clara
Woolner MacNeil and she died just 2 years after LMM was born. LMM was sent
to live with her MacNeil grandparents in Cavendish, PEI. LMM started
keeping a journal when she was 9 years old. She wrote many stories and
poems in her early years, but she burned all the stories, poems, and
journals that she wrote when she was 14. In 1892 LMM attended Prince of
Wales College. Her first teaching post was in Bideford, PEI. On July 11,
1911 on Prince Edward Island She married Rev. Ewen Macdonald. Her three
children were born at Leaskdale. She died in Toronto April 24, 1942 and
was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
